On June 28, 2017 the Kyrgyz National University (KNU) NPM Resource Center hosted the guest lecture by Marina Tolmacheva, professor of Washington State University, PhD in History, on “The Role of Education in the Development of Non-Profit Sector in the World”, which was attended by 18 students and professors of KNU. During lecture, Ms. Tolmacheva discussed the role of non-profit organizations (NPO) in the world, as the institutions of civil society, which act as the main partners of state authorities in addressing the problems faced by civil society. She presented the main criteria and indicators for the development of the non-profit sector in the world. Ms. Tolmacheva also spoke about the US experience, and noted that approximately 1.5 million NPOs operate in the United States, which actively interact with government authorities in addressing socio-economic problems.

“These NPOs undertake a significant number of activities, including advocacy of such issues as environment, healthcare, women’s rights, economic development, and many others. A lot of NPOs in the United States also operate in the fields that are not related to politics which include religious organizations, labor unions, groups that help vulnerable people, and those who live on Indian reservations” – said Tolmacheva.

The guest lecture was interactive and informative; the participants expressed great interest in the topic and asked many questions.
